Europe – Italy – Bavaria. Even the Franconians take notice: Bavaria as the nation of a “musical geography”? Indeed, there are many examples in the 18th century of establishing and performing “national” musical styles, with Georg Philipp Telemann as well as with his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, one thinks of English and French Suites or the Italian Concerto.
Maurice Steger first thrilled the audience at the Bach Week two years ago with his virtuoso artistry on numerous recorders. When this musician puts together an “international” concert programme and brings in a top ensemble like the Basel “La Cetra”, one is not immune to surprises. Above all, we hear a lot of Bach, who dedicated himself to the “flauto dolce” only in some of his cantatas and would certainly have written more original works for this family of instruments if he had known Maurice Steger!
