
In 1868, Johannes Brahms conceived his “Liebeslieder-Walzer” for four solo voices and piano four hands, quasi for home use. Under pressure from his publisher Simrock, a version without vocals was later written. A performance with choir, which Brahms had initially met with reluctance, finally also received the approval of his strict creator.
Also presented are lesser-known works: the four highly romantic nocturnes for choir by the unknown Brahms contemporary and Swiss-by-choice Heinrich von Herzogenberg.
The classicist Hans Huber Hall of the Stadtcasino Basel, based on plans from the late 19th century, where we are staging a concert for the first time, is certainly in keeping with the bourgeois, cheerful character.
